The Blue
Ridge Parkway is one of the premier scenic drives in America.
It is classified as an "All American Road", the highest ranking
in the Department of Transportation's National Scenic Byways Program.
The
route between Asheville and Cherokee North Carolina is the section
that almost wasn't. During the planning phase in the 1930's, a battle
developed between state representatives of Tennessee and North Carolina.
The Tennessee
delegation wanted the Parkway to turn west above Asheville and head
into their state. Ultimately though, the current route was chosen,
in large part, because of the unique scenic beauty that it affords.
This portion
of the drive includes views of Looking Glass Rock, one of the most
spectacular geologic formations along the Parkway, as well as Richland
Balsam, the highest point on the Parkway. The spectacular panoramic
views from here make visitors feel more like they are in Maine or
a western state, than in North Carolina.
The Blue
Ridge Parkway-Asheville to Cherokee
provides
an informative and entertaining narrated driving tour on this popular
section of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. The tour tells
about the history and events of the region through as series of
30 short stories.
These stories are choreographed to the prominent mile markers along
the way. Listeners simply travel at the posted speed limit and turn
the cassettes on and off when prompted.
In addition
to the informative stories, recommendations are made for specific
stops at the more than 75 scenic overlooks along the way. There
are also several short hikes that allow you to stretch you legs
and better appreciate the scenic beauty.
